History
Years ago the Boy Scouts of America was created as an outdoor adventure character building club for young men. The organization sought to teach young men moral values, the importance of community involvement, and leadership skills. Boy Scouts realized they needed to expand their reach if they were going to better prepare young men and women to be the leaders of tomorrow. Learning for Life and the Explorers program was created out of this expansion effort. Explorers is a career field specific co-educational program for young men and women. Today, the Acworth Police Department has partnered with North Cobb High School to sponsor a Law Enforcement career field Explorers program.
Purpose
The purpose of the Acworth Police Department - North Cobb High School Law Enforcement Explorer program is to further an Explorer’s academic education, encourage an Explorer’s participation in productive community service activities, and enhance an Explorer’s preparation for their future roles as citizens, community members, leaders and future law enforcement officers. The Explorer program also seeks to provide young men and women with a realistic introduction to the law enforcement career field and prepare them for a future in the field.
Participation
Participation in the Explorer’s program is open to any young man or woman between the ages of 14-21 who has an interest in the law enforcement career field and demonstrates a level of trustworthiness. Each explorer is taught law enforcement related skills at each meeting, participates in the community by assisting the police department during special events, and learns leadership skills through leadership roles within the program.
Goals
1. Introduce young people to the law enforcement career field.
2. Teach young people the importance of good moral character.
3. Encourage community involvement and participation.
4. Develop leadership skills in young people.
5. Discover the police officer’s of tomorrow.
